When my father-in-law said he wanted to take us for breakfast at the Honeybaked Ham Store when we were visiting Columbus earlier this fall, I thought to myself, “Really? The Honeybaked Ham Store?”
One of my faults about food is coming to a decision much too quickly — even before getting to the final destination. This was just one of those times.
Now, I love me some Honeybaked Ham at the holidays. I’ll be hovering over that pork carcass peeling off the sugary coating and licking my fingers of its savory juices. The leftovers are perfect for omelettes and sandwiches in the following days.
The Honeybaked Ham Store runs Sweet Clove Sunshine Cafe in Columbus, Ohio. This sit-down restaurant churns out hearty breakfast sandwiches, towering pancakes and mouth-watering good eggs benedicts.

I’m always on the lookout for the next best place for breakfast. I’d have to say breakfast is – by far – my most favorite meal of the day. If I had my way, more places would just specialize in breakfast 24/7. Because honestly, who doesn’t like an omelette for lunch sometimes or some pancakes for dinner?
Well, there’s a new place to get breakfast (and those other two meals a day) on Boston’s North Shore. Red’s Kitchen and Tavern opened earlier this summer and has been busy.
But, let’s take a step back about 50 years and start over in Salem, Mass. This is where Red’s Sandwich Shop first gained a loyal, local following. The sandwich shop stands in a building that dates back to the 18th century and has served meals to many over the years. Based on that popularity, it was a natural progression to open up a second location. Flash forward to May 2012, when the second location – Red’s Kitchen and Tavern – opened up on Route 1 in Peabody, Mass. This location is spacious and new. So, let’s take a look inside…

Holiday Inn’s express pancake machine. This counter-top appliance churns out one pancake every 18 seconds. So, how does it work? Well, thanks to a trip to Brattleboro, Vt., for Christmas, I got to see first-hand how this gadget works.
According to Hotel F&B magazine, an industry publication for hoteliers, the flapjack maker was rolled out to all of Holiday Inn Express’s 1,800 North American hotels in early 2011. Each machine comes with bags of premade mix that each make 35 pancakes. The batter drops onto a Teflon-coated belt, which lasts for about 60 bags of batter or approximately 2,100 pancakes. (Wow, that’s a lot of syrup!)
One of the best tips I can offer anyone who is in an unfamiliar city is to ask a local where to find the best eats. We were in downtown Chicago the weekend of the Chicago Marathon on our recent trip, so we knew wherever we went was going to be full. But we wanted to try something different, yet offered a high-quality breakfast to get us through a day at The Field Museum.
As I mentioned in the review of Gino’s East, we stayed in Chicago’s Theatre District at Hotel Allegro. The hotel has its own restaurant but we wanted something on the way to the museum campus. A hotel concierge or front desk staff are a great resource when you’re away from home. Never hesitate to ask them for a recommendation.
Our concierge recommended Yolk, located on Michigan Ave. in Chicago’s South Loop, and just a quick stroll from The Field Museum, Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium.
The restaurant’s menu is expansive, eclectic and amazing. Portions are huge, service is awesome and they have Nutella!

When I was a wee little girl back on the farm, we used to have the annual “Lumberjack Breakfast” at our elementary school. For one morning out of the year, we’d dress up in flannel shirts, don some old jeans, and enjoy a hearty breakfast of flapjacks, sausage and cold milk in tin mugs.
Ok, I didn’t grow up on a farm. But, the rest of that was all true. When I went to Madison Elementary in Wauwatosa, Wis., each year we’d have a lumberjack breakfast for the entire school. Some of the PTA moms would get out their griddles (and these things must have been ginormous to feed all of us kids) and they would cook us up some great breakfast food. For some reason I remember a llama one year but I guess that means Babe the Blue Ox just wasn’t available for photo ops.
Harking back to that earlier time of my childhood, we made the two-hour drive to Wisconsin Dells to enjoy their famous logging-camp style breakfast. For those of you not from the midwest, the Dells is like the Orlando of Wisconsin. It’s the waterpark capital of the US with a kitschy Main Street feel, old motels, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, stores that sell T-shirts for 20 for $10 and more. One of the best restaurants…er, attractions…in the Dells is Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty.
